10.15.11 | CIE Teams with Foundation Features and Rock 'n Roll Talent Manager Paul Shull on the "Mr. Butterscotch" Graphic Novel
October 15, 2011 - New York Comic Con: Comic book transmedia company Creative Impulse Entertainment (CIE), film and television production company Foundation Features, and rock 'n roll talent manager Paul Shull, announce a graphic novel based on the upcoming television series, "Mr. Butterscotch", following the adventures of Shull as he travels the globe dealing with his collective of rock stars.

Foundation Features' Executive in Charge of Television Rob LaBelle comments, "Foundation Features couldn't be more thrilled about teaming up with CIE to turn Mr. Butterscotch into a kick-ass graphic novel. Butterscotch’s real life already plays out like a graphic novel, so this is really a perfect opportunity for us. And CIE's the absolute best there is so Butterscotch couldn’t be in better hands. We’re currently producing the TV series Mr. Butterscotch, a reality-doc series following the maniacal adventures of Mr. Butterscotch, the wildly charismatic, heavily inked madman as he pursues the biggest game of all, the wild rock star. Butterscotch travels the world hanging with rock’s royalty and uses the tips and leads he gets from industry friends and music business insiders to propel his quest to find the next rock superstars. And as the bad ass, sword fighting superhero in his own graphic novel, Butterscotch will take it all to the next level of insanity. The Butterscotch graphic novel is an incredible compliment to the TV series. It’s a dynamic and unique approach to building a fan base in anticipation of the series as well as demonstrating the depth and richness of the Butterscotch brand."

Paul Shull adds, "The new partnership between Creative Impulse Entertainment and Foundation Features to make a graphic novel about me is quite possibly the worst thing that could happen to my ego."

CIE CEO Jan Lucanus continues, "The 'Mr. Butterscotch' project will be a game changer for comic books and transmedia integration. We're all pretty stoked on this one!"

CIE's flagship comic book, "JFH: Justice-For-Hire" has become one of the most downloaded martial arts comic books on the world's leading digital comic book store, Comics by ComiXology™. Foundation Features production credits include "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus", "Altitude", and the rock 'n roll feature-documentary"Hard Core Logo 2". Paul Shull has worked with a slew of musical talent, including the Foo Fighters, MIA, and Robbie Williams.

07.01.10 | Comic-Con-Bound Father/Son Writing Team Continue Gold Medal Fighting Streak to Inspire Art
New York, New York – July 1, 2010: In the midst of industry wide mayhem in preparation for San Diego’s Comic-Con: International – the largest pop culture event of its kind – veteran comic book writer, Jan C. Childress, and son and writing partner, Jan Lucanus, continue their unique integration of art and fighting after winning four gold medals for the second consecutive time at the latest International Chinese Martial Arts Competition (ICMAC) in the sport of Push Hands (T’ui Shou), a contact sport similar to Judo, Sumo, and freestyle wrestling, derived from the martial art of Tai Chi Chuan.

Lucanus, CEO and founder of Creative Impulse Entertainment, will have his animated directorial debut with the upcoming comic book and animation “Aluna” starring fan-favorite actress Paula Garces (“The Shield”, “Harold & Kumar”) that will premiere at Comic-Con. After a tournament in which no points were scored against him, Lucanus discusses the balancing of work and training, “If I don’t train, it’s difficult for me to work, to be creative. The sensitive yet explosive style of fighting that is Tai Chi Push Hands provides a sense of clarity for me in all that I do, which is why I am so adamant about popularizing the sport in the U.S. – I’m sure it will enhance so many lives.”

Childress, who is currently preparing a spin-off series for the critically acclaimed “JFH: Justice-For-Hire” mixed martial arts comic book series that will be announced at Comic-Con, adds, “I am grateful to the event’s promoter, Master Nick Scrima, for continuing to broaden the awareness of Tai Chi Chuan and other martial arts through these tournaments, which not only provide an arena for competition, but a forum to exchange ideas and forge new friendships."

The father son duo collectively took home gold in each category of Push Hands: Fixed Step – upper body and joint manipulation in which opponent who moves first losses a point, Restricted Step – a game akin to fencing in which opponents throw each other off a center line, and Extreme Moving Step – opponents are push or thrown out of an arena for points. In the Extreme, Lucanus and Childress met in the finals, but chose not to fight. “I’m not going to fight my Dad for a medal. He and Mom gave martial arts to me, so he deserves the gold”.

Lucanus and Childress compete on Grandmaster William C. C. Chen’s International Push Hands Team in New York, with Lucanus as the team-appointed captain. In addition to a slew of major announcements planned for Comic-Con this July, the father/son duo is training for the Tai Chi World Cup in Taiwan this October, but will compete in the ICMAC’s Internal & Push Hands Competition next – just days before Comic-Con.

Lucanus, Childress, and actress Paula Garces will hold a signing event for the “Aluna” comic at the Creative Impulse Entertainment booth #617 during Comic-Con, July 22-25. 04.01.10 | The Acclaimed “JFH: Justice-For-Hire – The Brawl” Premieres on YouTube’s MMA Web Series
New York, New York – April 1, 2010: The web series counterpart to the hit mixed martial arts comic book/DVD action series, “JFH: Justice-For-Hire”, premieres its highly anticipated “Brawl” episode today. Directed by Jan Lucanus,“JFH” co-creator and CEO of the brand’s home, Creative Impulse Entertainment (CIE), filming was done using new camera techniques aimed at intensifying action – dubbed “Weapon Camera Movement™” by developers Lucanus and “JFH” lead choreographer, Ian Morgan. Both are real-life martial arts fighting champions.

“Weapon is based on a handful of principles that we’re keeping under wraps for now, but are sure to keep the viewer fully engrossed,” states Lucanus. “It is truly a system. We wrote the rules and stick to them, but with an open mind. ‘Brawl’ is really about the story, as it is a prequel to the ‘JFH’ comic book series, so fans will really get into it, but if you’re new to the characters, you’ll still love the action”.

Ed Pollard, managing editor of Black Belt Magazine, the world’s leading martial arts publication, was privy to an advance screening of “JFH: Brawl” and came away with a notable reaction. “JFH: Brawl delivers raw excitement in its rooftop free-for-all. The camera work puts the viewer directly into the action and gives viewers a sense of being part of the action. Cheers to the JFH production team at CIE for knowing what works and choreographing this scene with top-flight martial arts action and credible stunt work. This is as real as it gets without being a hidden police camera at the scene of a crime!”

“’JFH Brawl’ is just a taste of what’s to come from the “JFH” series and our action stunt team,” said choreographer Morgan. “The camera techniques used in ‘Brawl’ happen quickly, and we’ve already moved onto more elaborate visual formulas in recent choreography sessions for upcoming ‘JFH’ productions, so consider this a preview.”

Jan Lucanus and Ian Morgan co-founded the stunt company Martial Arts Creative Team, which designs all of the comic book and live action sequences for CIE’s roster of content. Lucanus writes and develops for several multiplatform comic book properties, including “JFH: Justice-For-Hire”, currently the most downloaded martial arts-themed comic book on iTunes’ Comics Application – the world’s leading mobile comic book store – and is directing the upcoming comic book and animation,”Aluna”, starring Actress Paula Garces (“Harold & Kumar” film franchise, “The Shield” TV series).

“JFH Brawl™” is available on the “JFH” YouTube Channel: www.YouTube.com/JusticeForHire. For more information, please visit: www.CreativeImpulseEnt.com. To download iTunes’ Comics App for free, go to www.iTunes.com/apps/Comics.

03.30.10 | Father/Son Writing Team of “JFH: Justice-For-Hire” Comic Book Fight and Win Martial Arts Gold Medals
Dallas, Texas – March 27, 2010: Jan Lucanus, founder and CEO of Creative Impulse Entertainment (CIE) and co-creator of the hit mixed martial arts comic book/live action series, “JFH: Justice-For-Hire”, and his father Jan C. Childress, a veteran in the comic book industry and “JFH” co-writer, competed as part of the William C. C. Chen Push Hands Team in the Dallas International Chinese Martial Arts Competition (ICMAC) this weekend and won four gold medals in three separate divisions.

Push hands, the sparring aspect of the distinctly soft martial art of Tai Chi Chuan, can most easily be described as a contest of space control, and has three competitive iterations: Fixed Step (explosive joint/body mass manipulation where players lose a point if feet are moved while sparring), Restricted Step (similar to fencing where players must knock each other off a center line), and Moving Step (freestyle movement in a ring with throws akin to wrestling and Judo). For the first time in the United States, Extreme Push Hands was introduced into the competition circuit by Dr. Shie-Ming Hwang and event organizer Nick Scrima, taking the sport to a more aggressive level with rules closer to freestyle grappling in an effort to make the sport a breeding ground for professional Mixed Martial Artists with roots in Tai Chi Chuan.

“This is the only way for Tai Chi to get the respect it deserves as a martial art,” states Lucanus, who won the gold n the 175 Lb. weight class in both the Fixed Step and the Extreme Push Hands divisions. “Dad and I have competed in this sport for years, and it has been difficult to find competitions in the US that allow Tai Chi to grow as a fighting style.” He continues, “Grandmaster William C. C. Chen and the Chen Family have encouraged to our team to experiment and develop the art over the years. It is truly ground-breaking for Dr. Hwang and Nick Scrima to launch a platform for players to compete on this higher level.”

Mr. Childress, who took gold in both the Fixed and Restricted Step divisions, adds, “The matches were superbly refereed and the players were all down for the elevated competition. The fact that I almost got both arms broken only underscored the intensity of the game. There's nothing like the sound of your joints cracking while in the throes of competition!” He continues, “I must say, too, that nothing beats the sheer thrill and pride in watching my son perform. That is priceless.”

Both Lucanus and Childress credit their training partners on the William C. C. Chen Push Hands Team for their achievements in the competition. Lucanus and Childress co-write on several multiplatform comic book properties, including “JFH: Justice-For-Hire”. Childress’ solo comic book titles, “Tengu: A Ninja/Samurai Love Story”, and “Durga: The Geomancer”, are CIE’s best-selling digital comic books on iTunes’ Comics Application – the world’s leading mobile comic book store.

Max Chen, a member of the "JFH" Martial Arts Creative Team, is one of two choreographers for the "JFH: Justice-For-Hire" comic book, and can also be seen portaying the character Sudden K.O. in the pages of the "JFH" comic. He will reprise the role in the upcoming "JFH" feature film.

10.26.07 | “Justice-For-Hire’s Fight Night at Von Dutch LA” Recap: A Groundbreaking Evening of Fighting, Comics, and the Arts.
2007 marks the official launch year of three new Creative Impulse Entertainment (CIE) companies-- three divisions to develop and produce intellectual property in film, comic books, music, and videogames. Creative Impulse Entertainment's vision is to uplift society through a fusion of creativity and multiculturalism targeted to the broadest international marketplace. During the last nine months, CIE has achieved the following milestones:

• Unleashed a groundbreaking new martial arts-based camera system that . wowed fans at the ’07 San Diego Comic Con,
• Musical artist Sage Michael developed the first CIE album while touring
with multi-platinum recording artist, Ludacris,
• Pre-released three new comic book series in the graphic literature
industry, and
• Launched prep for CIE's first videogame title.

And the year is far from over.

CIE's latest exciting venture teamed the company with international lifestyle brand, Von Dutch, whose world-renowned brand ranges from custom motorcycles to designer watches and an ultra-chic clothing line. In a major Los Angeles event that took place on Thursday, September 27, 2007, Von Dutch partnered up with CIE to promote the latter's flagship franchise, “JFH: Justice-For-Hire.”

“JFH is the world's first official ‘Ultra-Realistic’ mixed martial arts comic book. Period," said CIE Chief Executive Officer Jan Lucanus. "We are the first to take real fighters' moves in vivid detail, and put them on the comic page. We want people to know that the action and story that we deliver with JFH are all about quality and being socially conscious," added Lucanus, who is also the JFH creator/co-writer and a long-time martial artist. He went on to say, "Kene G at Von Dutch saw our JFH comic and approached me about doing an event together. He made it clear that our goals were the same. When I heard that the owner of Von Dutch, Tonny Sorenson, was an Olympic Tae kwon Do champ, it was a go. No one has ever done an event like this. That’s the definition of ground-breaking!”

Dubbed “Justice-For-Hire presents… Fight Night at Von Dutch LA”, the event celebrated the official launch of the JFH: Justice-For-Hire comic book in Diamond Comic Distributors Previews catalogue, which hit stands on September 26. To consumers, that means that the first issue will be available in comic book stores in December, packaged with a live martial arts action-packed DVD. The comic book's release will plant the seeds for the JFH multimedia franchise, which will include a feature film, videogame, and television/internet spin-offs. This very special evening also benefited MTV’s Life Beat AIDS organization.

Headlining the event was world-renowned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) master, John Machado. Machado - choreographer and cast member of the upcoming David Mamet mixed martial arts film Redbelt - showcased the power and beauty of BJJ with his purple-belt student Luis Lee, while simultaneously promoting his upcoming comic book Faixa-Preta with writer/artist Chadwick Coleman, which is slated for a 2008 international release through Creative Impulse Publishing

Also on the billing for the event were some of the top martial artists in the world fight circuit, including World Champion San Shou Fighter Max Chen, and U.S. Champion San Da fighter Ian Morgan, both of whom painstakingly choreograph all the action in the comic book pages as part of the “JFH” Martial Arts Creative Team – the driving force behind the comic’s martial arts authenticity. The two champions will do the same for the upcoming “JFH” feature film.

“Everyone fighting at this event is also a character in the comic, and will each reprise that roll in the ‘JFH’ feature. This is truly a one-of-a-kind event,” said Lucanus, who also be stepped into the ring for a bout. “As a creative team, we are a very hands-on group. It’s important that people know that what they see in the comic is real, not some fluffy superhero-style action written and drawn by someone who has never gotten punched in the face.”

In addition to explosive demo fights, there were also martial arts demonstrations from Lucanus’ father, JFH co-writer and President of CIE’s publishing division, Jan C. Childress - an international champion T’ai Chi Push Hands fighter and martial arts Hall-of-Famer – as well as an SLD (Filipino live-blade/stick fighting) demo from master Jessy Abrescy with Ahmed Best and his team. The event's program also featured performances from special musical guests The Benefits as well as a dazzling cirque halftime show from Cirque Du Soleil’s Realis.

The pacemaker event drew professionals and celebrities from the film, music, videogame, comic book, and martial arts communities. The select audience was also the first to see the limited edition commemorative “JFH/Von Dutch” T-shirts that will be carried in Von Dutch stores worldwide. The proceeds from the T-shirts will go to charity.

“We packed Von Dutch with 1,100 people,” stated Lucanus. “ I looked around and said ‘Wow, all this for JFH? We have expanded so quickly, it is really incredible. Just wait till ’08.” Lucanus revealed a tidbit about the future during an interview, “We will be launching a JFH: Justice-For-Hire Youtube channel which will be regularly updated with new fight sequences from our Martial Arts Creative Team, interviews, and more. The site will feature different content than what we release on DVD with the comics. We want people to get to know the team behind JFH. They’re all future action stars with something important and positive to say right now.”
